My name is Trevon Simmons, a student at Luke C. Moore Opportunities Academy, now working as an intern at Community Bridge Inc. (CBI). CBI, Inc. is an awesome company that specializes in facilities maintenance and landscaping. I learned about CBI while attending a Job Shadowing open house at Luke C. Moore. Students were given an opportunity to talk with various professionals in attendance.
Since I have an interest in landscaping, I talked with Ms. Shawn Nance, President/ CEO of Community Bridge, Inc. After talking with Ms. Nance, I chose to shadow her because I liked her attitude and she was willing to help others regardless of your background. And I thought it would be a great opportunity to do something I love to do– working hands on landscaping and getting dirty pulling weeds and cutting grass.
I’ve had the best experience shadowing Ms. Nance; she has a great spirit. Ms. Nance and I talked about short and long term goals. And I shared my strengths and weaknesses with her. I told her I wanted to help youth challenged by the streets because that was me.
I also told her I had no money and no job; and she said “that’s ok I’ll help you out.” Ms. Nance said “I’m going to give you a job with my company.” I responded, but is it guaranteed? I’ve been with entrepreneurs and people with job opportunities before and they did nothing but sell me dreams. Ms. Nance said, “Well let’s shake on it”; and she kept her word. She changed my life so fast. I wish this opportunity was at all schools. I believe this program will have a great impact on a lot of students in the DC area.
During the couple of weeks that I’ve been at CBI, I have worked alongside other individuals with great landscaping experience, and they’ve taught me a lot of fun facts about the company and the job. Shout Out to Community Bridge for giving me a chance to get back on track!
